Abstract
367,880. Supporting aircraft. WILLIAMS, G. M., 87, Lambs Conduit Street, London. Nov. 21, 1930, No. 35147. [Class 4.] Aircraft are provided with auxiliary supporting means comprising a plane and fans for forcing air in opposed directions into the space below the plane. As applied to an aeroplane, Fig. 1, the plane a is disposed symmetrically beneath the fuselage b. Oppositely rotating fans d are placed in housings in side walls c and are driven by electromotors d<1>. The plane is provided with end walls such as f pivoted at their upper edges and adjustable rearwardly positively or automatically against the restraint of springs. The front of the plane may be shaped to offer the minimum resistance in flight and may be slightly upwardly inclined. More than one such plane may be provided and may, in an aeroplane, replace the centre section of an upper plane or replace the lower plane of a biplane. According to the Provisional Specification the plane may be closed on the underside, and curved longitudinal surfaces may be fitted downwardly to direct the airflow.
