Planes, arrangement and construction of. - Moored seaplanes and aeroplanes are provided with air brakes or systems of air brakes so proportioned that when adjusted for full effect, substantially horizontal air currents are rendered ineffective for lifting the machine from the water or ground. In the case of a biplane an additional surface may be secured in an inclined position between the front and rear wing struts, the rear connection being adjustable in height. Or sections of the rear edges of the planes may be hinged and turned up or down. In the case of a monoplane a separate plane may be secured at an angle to the upper surface of the plane by cords or struts, or a portion 17, Fig. 4, of the surface itself may be raised and adjusted according to the strength of the wind. Fig. 5 shows a plane in which the front part 18 can be turned down and secured by struts 20. These struts may support an additional surface 21. Fig. 6 shows a plane in which a portion 22 of the upper surface is raised as the front part 18 is turned down. The movable parts may besubdivided along the span of the wing, as many subdivisions only as are required being brought. into use.
