Abstract

518,670. Controlling aircraft. STONE, T. H. Aug. 2, 1938, No. 22825. [Class 4] An auxiliary surface or surfaces adapted to be nested on either or both upper and lower surfaces of an aircraft wing is carried by arms pivoted to the wing about an axis disposed nearer to the leading or trailing edge of the wing according to whether the trailing or leading edge of the surface is disposed adjacent the trailing or leading edge of the wing. In one form, the arms 21 are pivoted to brackets carried by the front spar 11 of the wing and a hydraulic jack is pivotally mounted on the rear spar 12 and comprises relatively telescopic cylinders 24A, 24B, 24C and a piston rod 24D pivoted to the surface 17. Either or both ailerons or wing flaps may be disposed rearwardly of the surface. In a modification, an additional auxiliary surface is nested normally against the upper leading surface of the wing. In this case the flaps are separately actuated by jacks disposed horizontally in the wing. In.a further modification, an auxiliary surface on the upper leading surface of the wing is connected through link and lever mechanism with the lower auxiliary surface which is actuated in a manner similar to that shown in Fig. 2.
