Abstract
770,923. Aircraft. UNITED AIRCRAFT CORPORATION. Dec. 15, 1954 [Dec. 31, 1953], No. 36289/54. Class 4. An aircraft has a wing of triangular plan form with its apex pointing forwardly and an auxiliary sustaining surface of triangular plan form forward of the centre of gravity of the aircraft with its apex pointing forwardly, and adapted to be moved into and out of lift producing position. The aircraft is fitted with jet engines 16 buried in the wings and two elevons 26, 28. In Fig. 1, surfaces 30, 32 are adapted to be protruded from the fuselage; being hinged vertically at 34, 36, Fig. 3, and operable by toggle links 46, 48, pivoted at 44 to the piston rod 42 of a double acting jack 38. The hydraulic leads to the jack may also feed the undercarriage jack through pipes 74, 76, so that the surfaces 30, 32 can be extended and retracted with the nose wheel. A valve 75 enables the surfaces to be operated alone. In Fig. 5, the surface is normally nested in an aperture 80 in the wing, and can be swung on a parallelogram linkage 82, 84, to the operative position shown, the link 82 being secured to a cogwheel engaging a rack operated by a hydraulic jack. The surface may again be operated with the nose wheel 24. In Figs. 9 and 10 a triangular surface 104 is shown attached to the nose wheel strut 108, the strut forming part of a parallelogram linkage. In this case, the outer portions 110, 112 are foldable to the positions shown in chain lines by a jack 118 having twin pistons 120, 122 driving racks 124, 126 and cogwheels 114, 116. The jack 118 and the nose wheel retraction jack 72 are again operable in unison. Specification 647,779 is referred to.
