1455560 Aircraft undercarriages HAWKER SIDDELEY AVIATION Ltd 19 Nov 1973 [17 Nov 1972] 53386/72 Heading B7G An aircraft undercarriage is mounted on a fore-and-aft axis 2 for sideways extension from a stowed position within the underside of a fuselage (left-hand side of Fig. 1), where it is enclosed by doors 20, to an outwardly-splayed position (right-hand side of Fig. 1) and the wheels 4 are mounted on the main leg member 5 by an axle beam 9, Fig. 2, which during the initial stage of retraction is swung upwardly to move the wheels from position 11 to position 12 to shorten the undercarriage. The beam 9 is restrained against upward movement by an oleo strut 13 attached to and substantially in alignment with, a pivoted link 16 attached at 17 to leg 5. The leg 5 is braced sideways by a folding side-stay 34, 37 connected respectively at 35 to the fuselage and at 38 to leg 5 and this has a pivotal connection 23 to a retraction jack 22. A further link connection 40, 42 connects the side-stay to a torque link 45 in turn pivotally connected to a lug 47 on link 16. In retraction, contraction of jack 22 breaks the alignment of side-stay 34, 37 and initiates the inward movement of the undercarriage. Simultaneously this applies a compressive force to link 40 which through links 42 and 45 results in upward swing- ing of the lower end of link 16 thereby raising wheels 4 to the position 12 by the time the leg has pivoted to the vertical position, the undercarriage thereafter moving to the fully stowed position.
