Abstract
568,365. Retractable undercarriages. COWEY, L. E. July 2, 1943, No. 10784. [Class 4] A retractable wheel unit comprises a shockabsorber strut 5 connected to pairs of approximately parallel links 10, 12, such that the strut is given a movement of translation substantially perpendicular to the longitudinal axis during raising and lowering of the unit, the unit being operated by a hydraulic jack, the cylinder 23 of which is pivotally mounted at an intermediate point 31 between the upper links 10. Spring- loaded catches 18, 19 are provided for retaining the unit in the lowered and retracted positions, by engagement with a pin 20 at the top of the strut 5. The pin 20 is disengaged from the catches 18, 19 by means of the jack 23, the ram of which actuates a double cam 21, integral with the pin 20, through a link 25 and bell-crank 24. Fairings 34 are connected to the lower links 12 through universal joints 35 and rods 36.
