Abstract

613,382. Aircraft control. WILSON, F. H. June 19, 1946, No. 18480. [Class 4] Wings 1 are each pivoted about vertical pivots 3 (preferably at the centre of pressure) so that they can be swept back from or forward of the transverse position shown by operating mechanism constructed so that the forces due to air-pressure tending to move the wings backward are opposed to each other when transmitted into the operating mechanism; the wings are so shaped that when in a forward position they each present a high-lift section and when in a backward position they present a lamina flow or low-lift section. The wing portion 26, on the inside of pivot 3, is within a fairing when the wing is extended but, when the wing is retracted, the portion 26 is moved outwardly and forwardly, providing a lift which counteracts any tendency to nosediving. The operating mechanism comprises a hydraulic cylinder 4, with a piston 6 pivoted at 17 and which is mounted in a frame 18 carrying a lever 19, to which toggle links 22, 23 for operating the wings are connected. The operation of the cylinder 4 in the central position shown moves the wings symmetrically; rear cylinders 13, 14 may be used to move the piston-rod 6 about its pivot 17 to produce an unsymmetrical position of cylinder 4 to advance one wing and retract the other.
