652,058. Controlling aircraft. FAIREY AVIATION CO., Ltd. May 27, 1948, No. 14379. [Class 4] A controlling means for a high-speed aircraft comprises a pair of wings hingedly mounted about a transverse axis XX passing through, or nearly through, the centre of pressure of each wing, and operating means for each wing, to move it about its hinge to vary its incidence, the operating means for each wing including an actuating-member capable of being varied in length, such as a hydraulic jack, located substantially vertically and secured at one of its ends to the aircraft fuselage and at the other end to an inwardly-projecting extension of the wing, and means to vary the effective length of the actuating member at the will of the pilot, the inwardly-projecting extension of the wing being formed as a T-shaped yoke having its cross-limb substantially vertical, and two actuating members are secured to the ends of the cross-limb and, at a point intermediate said ends, to the fuselage. As shown, the inner ribs 13, 14 of a pair of wings carry spigots 11, 12 about which the wings may be pivoted by jacks 35, 38 and 36, 37 pivotally attached respectively at 23, 24 to a fuselage frame 10 and at 27, 30 and 28, 29 to T-arms 17, 18 and 19, 20 on the front wing spars 15, 16. Two levers 25, 26 are spherically mounted at 21, 22 on the frame 10 and are also pivotally attached to the wings. A modification allowing independent variation of the wings is described in which each lever 25, 26 is replaced by two links universally articulated at 21, 22. Specification 609,013 is referred to.
