Abstract
733,802. Controlling aircraft. BRITISH MESSIER, Ltd. Oct. 19, 1953 [Oct. 29, 1952], No. 27242/52. Class 4. A hydraulic actuator for operating leading edge flaps on aircraft comprises a base, Ó jack secured thereto, bracket means supported from the base for carrying a parallel motion, means connecting the moving element of the jack to a part of the parallel motion which executes a straight. line movement and transmitting means for the force to be exerted by the actuator, which transmitting means are operated by the members of the parallel motion. A web 17 of a leading edge spar carries on its forward face a base block 18 which is machined to receive the ends of two accumulator cylinders 21, 22, which constitute the bracket means, and a double acting jack cylinder 23 located between and in alignment with the accumulator cylinders. The rear or outer ends of the cylinders 21, 22 are closed by caps 26, 27 extended by bracket elements 28, 29 united by a cross beam 30 and provided with pivots 31, 32 for levers 33, 34. The extremity of the ram 36 of jack 23 is connected by links 37 and 35 to the inner ends of levers 33, 34 such that the linkwork constitutes a Watt motion wherein the pivot between links 35 and 37 travels in a straight line. The outer ends of levers 33, 34 are connected to operating rods 16, 15 (the transmitting means) which extend forwardly through the wing to effect simultaneous operation of two leading edge flaps (not shown). A valve body 40, mounted on the forward face of the block 18, has connections to air-pipes 41, 42 for pressurizing the accumulators 21, 22 and the valve may be operated to supply appropriate ends of the jack 23 with pressure liquid either from a hydraulic connection 45 or the 'accumulators 21, 22.
