Abstract

1,028,994. Fluid-pressure brake servomotors. GIRLING Ltd. Jan. 30, 1964 [Feb. 19, 1963; June 12, 1963 (4)], Nos. 6575/63, 23364/63, 23365/63, 23366/63 and 23367/63. Heading F2F. In a fluid-pressure operated booster comprising a housing, a movable wall across which a valve-controlled pressure differential is developed, the input and output force applying members are connected by a lever. In one embodiment (Fig. 1, not shown), the lever is pivoted to the wall and a pedal operated input rod is connected to one end of the lever. An intermediate connection is provided for the output rod which is connected to a brake master cylinder and the other end of the lever is connected to the controlling valve mounted on the wall. The lever may be arranged as a second order lever. The wall may tilt under the action of the input member, the valve being applied by abutments on either the input or output member. In the booster shown the output member 105 passes through the thrust block 110, piston 103 and a valve plate 111 mounted on the latter and provided with the seats of a valve 121 (Fig. 10, not shown) on a vacuum valve 124. The hollow input member 114 is pivotally attached to the valve plate and provides the air inlet, terminating in passages which communicate with one side of the air inlet valve member 121. A valve arm 126 is pivoted to the output member 105 by the cross-pin 129 and carries valve members 121, 124. Actuation of member 114 tilts piston 103 about an axis perpendicular to that of pin 129, carrying with it plate 111 to close the vacuum valve 124. Further tilting moves the seating of valve 121 away from that valve, and simultaneously valve member 124 moves with the plate valve to swing arm 126 about pin 129 and lift valve 129 away from its receding seat to supply air to chamber 102. It is stated that the casing may be of asymmetrical cross-section and offset input and output members be employed.
