[Class 78 (iii)] [Also in Group XXIX] Control mechanism for hydraulic or pneumatic jacks is mounted on the moving ram. Fig. 2 shows one construction in which a ram 2, carrying a piston 3 fitted with packing on both sides, moves in relation to a fixed cylinder 1 and applies a pulling or pushing force to a member attached to the eye 5. A lever 6 on one end of the ram may be operated by hand or power or automatically by devices such as thermostats or speed indicators to control the position of a sliding sleeve 16 through a connecting link 25. When the sleeve is moved towards the left, the ports 17 and 18 are brought into register to admit fluid from the pipe 11 to the right-hand side of the piston through the duct 19, thus moving the ram to the left. Meanwhile fluid from the left-hand side of the piston is expelled through the ducts 21, 20 to the exhaust pipe 12 passing through the ports 23, 24 which are brought into register by the same movement. On moving the sleeve to the right, ports 17 and 18 come into register to admit fluid to the left-hand side of the piston to move the ram towards the left, and the fluid from the other side escapes through duct 19 and ports 24<1>, 23'. Movement of the ram in either direction ceases whenever the handle 6 is brought to a central position. In the modified form shown in Fig. 1, the piston 3 is moved by power in one direction only, i.e. towards the left, and is returned automatically by the pressure in a reservoir 15. In this case the pivoted lever 6 controls two spring valves 8, 9 simultaneously so that in one position it establishes communication between the pressure main 11 and the right-hand side of the piston and in the opposite position opens up communication between the piston and the exhaust pipe 12. The jack is particularly adapted for operating the wing flaps and retractable radiators of aircraft.
