Abstract
627,737. Fluid-pressure servomotor-control systems. HOBSON, Ltd., H. M., and WESTBURY, R. Jan. 14, 1947, No. 1239. [Class 135] A manually-controlled hydraulic power-assisted mechanism, e.g. for actuating an aircraft flying-control surface, is irreversible both during power-assisted actuation and, should the pressure supply fail during direct manual actuation. A housing 10, Fig. 4, sliding on a piston 15 having a rod 14 pivoted to a fixed member, is pivoted to an arm 18 operatively connected to the control surface 20. A member 23, actuated by the pilot's control lever, is in pin'-and-slot connection with the housing and is linked to a threeland valve 13 controlling the communication of the supply line 35 and the return line 33 with passages 36, 37 leading to the ends of the power cylinder 11. Should the supply pressure fail, liquid is trapped within the housing by a check-valve 38 in the supply line and by a spring-loaded valve 39 which is normally maintained open by the supply pressure acting through a pipe 40. During direct manual actuation, the central land 53 of the control valve is moved to uncover a passage 42 communicating through checkvalves 43, 44 with the ends of the power cylinder and thus providing a byepass to enable the trapped liquid to traverse the piston. Movement of the control surface and therefore the housing by the external load is prevented by the hydraulic lock set up either by re-centring the control valve or by one of the check-valves 43, 44. Specification 569,924 is referred to. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 629,086.
