Abstract

569,749. Fluid-pressure servomotor-control systems. TRIPP, E. J. Aug. 17, 1943, No. 13331. [Class 135] In a hydraulic servomotor comprising a double-acting piston, a piston valve slidable therein, and resilient means between the valve and piston, the piston is locked hydraulically when the valve is in neutral position relative to the piston and may be moved against a light load through the resilient means, hydraulically against a heavier load or through a lost-motion device if the power supply fails. As shown for actuating aircraft ailerons or equivalent members, a lever 13 connected to the pilot's control column is linked to a piston valve 32 slidable in the double-acting piston 29, and the member to be actuated is connected through a lever 16, link 40 and pin 45 to the piston 29. Springs 60a, 60b tend to keep the valve central with respect to the piston, whatever the position of the latter, so that liquid supplied by a pump through a port 19, and a groove or grooves 53 passes through ports 51a, 52a to the interior of the valve, and thence through openings 33, 34 to return to the pump or supply tank, the working spaces 48a, 48b at the ends of the cylinder 23 being sealed so that the piston is hydraulically locked in position. The valve has slots 43 receiving the pin 45 so as to allow the valve to be moved out of its central or neutral position by the lever 13, so as to allow liquid to pass to one end or the other of the cylinder through ports 54a, groove 59a and ports 55a, liquid from the other end being exhausted through ports 56b, 58b. These ports are subsequently closed by the follow-up movement of the piston. If the load on the lever 16 is light, motion is transmitted by the springs 60a, 60b without the aid of pressure liquid. Should the liquid supply fail, motion is transmitted by an end of the slot 43 engaging the pin 45, a non-return valve 62a or 62b permitting liquid to enter one working space while it escapes from the other through ports 56a and groove 58a. The levers 13, 16 may be mounted to turn about a common axis.
