Abstract
473,379. Controlling aircraft. FAIREY AVIATION CO., Ltd., and BROWN, A. C. Aug. 20, 1936, No. 22949. [Class 4] An aerofoil comprising a main wing 14, Fig. 1, and an auxiliary wing 11 adapted to be faired under the trailing portions of the main wing or to be projected rearwardly thereof has the auxiliary wing 11 fitted with a split flap 12 operable in either the extended or retracted position. Wing 11 is mounted by cross pieces 19, 20 engaging in slotted arcuate guides 18 fixed to wing 14, Fig. 3, and is moved by a hydraulic or pneumatic jack 21. Flap 12 is pivoted to wing 11 at 15 and is connected by link and lever mechanism 16, 17, 22, Fig. 5, and bevel gear 23 with a splined telescopic shaft 24 one part of which is mounted on the auxiliary wing 11 and the other on main wing 14, shaft 24 being rotated by means under the pilot's control. Flaps on opposite sides of the aircraft are simultaneously controlled by right and left-hand threaded shafts 25, 26 engaging corresponding threads in the hub of gear 23. The arrangement is such that the flap can be raised or lowered with wing 11 in the position shown in Fig. 1 or Fig. 3 depending upon whether the major consideration is that of obtaining increase in drag, increase in lift, or increase in both lift and drag.
