Abstract

483,424. Seaplane undercarriages. FAIREY AVIATION CO., Ltd., and LOBELLE, M. J. O. April 27, 1937, No. 12045. [Class 4] A float seaplane provided with an observation cabin or gun turret beneath the fuselage has the floats so mounted that they may be caused to approach one another in flight and thus improve the view or field of fire from the cabin or turret. Floats 10 are mounted toward the forward end in the manner shown on the left side of the Figure and toward the after end as shown at the right side ; the right side of the turret is shown at 11. At the forward end each float is carried by an arm 13 pivoted at 14 to fuselage 12 and is braced to the junction of vee-struts 16 by a hydraulic jack 15. At the after end each float is connected to an outwardly and rearwardly inclined arm 17 pivoted to the fuselage at 18 and braced by a verticallydisposed hydraulic jack 20 pivotally supported by wing 20. Shock-absorbing means may be provided between floats and arms. On alighting the jacks 15 will be in tension and jacks 20 in compression; the jacks in normal position are therefore fully extended and fully contracted, respectively. The floats are caused to assume the dotted line position by admitting pressure fluid to the underside of the pistons of jacks 15 and above the pistons of jacks 20.
