Abstract
344,442. Motor power plant. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd., Crown House, Aldwych, London, COE, R. T., 14, Manor Road, and FITCHETT, F., 25, Lawford Road, both in Rugby. Nov. 27, 1929, No. 36351. [Class 110 (iii).] In a ship propulsion system in which a reciprocating engine drives a propeller, and is assisted by an induction motor supplied from a generator coupled to a turbine using exhaust steam from the reciprocating engine, the fluctuations of current in the electrical drive, due to cyclic irregularities in the reciprocating engine drive, are reduced by connecting a slip regulator in the rotor circuit of the induction motor. This may be a variable resistance, but a series-excited commutator motor 7 may be cascaded with the induction motor 6 and coupled, either to an asynchronous generator 9 arranged to feed into the main current circuit, or to a direct current generator feeding a suitable load.
