Abstract

1,144,452. Power plant. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. June 28, 1966 [July 1, 1965], No.28840/66. Heading F1Q. A propulsion system for driving water vehicles comprises a propeller a first propulsion drive, a second propulsion drive 20 and transmission means 22, 24, 26 for substantially silently conveying the power of the second propulsion drive to the propeller. As shown the transmission means includes an electrical generator 22 connected to the second propulsion drive and an electrical motor 26 electrically connected to the generator. The turbines 3 and 4 are employed together to drive the propeller 32 through the clutch 42 or alternatively are used in conjunction with the turbine 2, so that all three turbines impart their power to drive the propeller 32 during high speed operation. Either turbine 3 or 4 may be disconnected and the other turbine employed to drive the propeller 32 alone if desired. During silent or cruise operation the turbine 2 alone drives the propeller 32. A steam turbine or diesel engine can be employed in place of any or all of the turbines. Use of a battery, a fuel cell or a reactor is referred to.
