Abstract

1496374 Power generating systems SOC D'ETUDES DE MACHINES THERMIQUES 23 Oct 1975 [23 Dec 1974] 43483/75 Heading H2H [Also in Division B7] An electric power generating assembly comprises a speed reducing gear 13 between an internal combustion engine 11 and a transmission shaft 14, a turbo-alternator 16 driven by energy derived from the engine exhaust gases and a variable speed reversible transmission system 27 through which the turbine 17 of the turbo-alternator is coupled to the gear. The engine 11 is a Diesel engine which drives a ship's propellor 15 via the gear 13. Exhaust gases from the engine are fed through manifolds 19 to a boiler 20 which drives the turbine 17 and an alternator 18. In the event of failure of the boiler 20 an independent boiler 25 may be connected to the turbine via a valve 21. The hydrostatic transmission system 27 includes a pump 28 and an hydraulic motor 29 the output 26 of which assists in the driving of the propellor via the gear 13. A servo mechanism 31 controls the output flow rate of the pump 28 in dependence on the speed of the shaft 14. A fluid tapping 32 is connected to a control or driving arrangement for hydraulic motors for unloading goods and/or cargohandling pumps.
