A turbo-charger associated with an internal combustion engine (31), Fig.3 (not shown), comprises an exhaust gas driven turbine 15 connected by a shaft 13 to the charging compressor 19, and an oil driven Pelton wheel 27 mounted on the shaft to provide additional driving energy to the compressor at low engine speeds. Oil is directed on to the Pelton wheel 27 by a nozzle (28) supplied from an engine driven variable displacement pump (30) drawing from a reservoir (32). The oil leaving the wheel returns to the reservoir through a duct 33. Lubricating oil is supplied to the shaft bearings 12 through an inlet 25 and passages 26.
