Abstract
800,263. Charge pumps. METROPOLITAN-VICKERS ELECTRICAL CO., Ltd. May 22, 1957 [Feb. 28, 1956], No. 6179/56. Class 7(2) [Also in Group XXXVII] When the speed of a marine &c. diesel engine scavenge air compressor 2 driven by an exhaust-gas turbine 1 tends to fall below a predetermined value, a slip-ring or squirrel-cage A.C. induction motor 3 permanently coupled to the compressor 2 is energized from an A.C. source 8 under the control of a D.C. winding 11 connected by a full-wave dry-plate rectifier 7 in a frequency-responsive circuit comprising an inductance 5 and capacitance 6 and energized by a tachometer alternator 4. As shown, the winding 11 is the input windings of a saturable reactor which may be of one or more stages and whose output windings 9 in series with the stator winding of the motor 3 have their impedance markedly reduced when the current supplied to the input windings 11 exceeds a value which may be adjusted by biasing windings on the reactor. A switch 12, supplying the motor 3 as shown or applying suitable input to the reactor enables the motor to be started with the diesel engine at rest. In Fig. 2 (not shown), the winding 11, energized from the rectifier 7 directly or via an exciter, is the field winding of an alternator supplying current to the motor 3 and driven by (1) an A.C. motor whose supply, for starting the motor 3, may be connected thereto or via a rectifier to the winding 11 or its exciter or (2) a D.C. motor whose supply, for starting the motor 3, may be connected directly to the winding 11 or its exciter. The invention is applicable to two-stroke and four-stroke engines.
