Alloys.-In the production of an aluminium alloy containing zinc and magnesium, with or without bismuth a preliminary alloy of part of the aluminium with the zinc and magnesium is added to the remainder of the aluminium, the bismuth, if used. being added subsequently. In making the preliminary alloy some aluminium may be melted and successive small quantities of magnesium and zinc added alternately, followed by more aluminium, and so on. The preliminary alloy may comprise 37 per cent of aluminium, 17 per cent of magnesium, and 46 per cent of zinc, and 3-20 per cent of this alloy may be added in solid form to molten aluminium to make the final alloy. The amount of bismuth may be 0.5-5 per cent.
