Abstract

Magnesium alloys comprising at least 80 per cent of magnesium together with zinc and iron, with or without manganese, contain also silver or beryllium, or both. The alloys may contain up to 15 per cent of zinc, 2 per cent of iron, and 2 per cent of silver or beryllium, or up to 15 per cent of zinc, 3 per cent of manganese, 1 per cent of iron, and 1,5 per cent silver or beryllium. In manufacturing the alloys a preliminary alloy containing the necessary amount of zinc, iron, and silver or beryllium, or both silver and beryllium, is added to molten magnesium. When manganese is also present, a part is added to molten magnesium and the remainder to the preliminary alloy.
