Abstract

Lathes. - In a vertical - spindle lathe having a single standard d supporting a fixed tool-carrying arm c, the face-plate a is rotatably mounted on a saddle b which is horizontally adjustable on the bed e in a direction parallel to the arm c so as to increase the radius of action of the lathe, the tool-holder being correspondingly displaced along the arm c before the turning operation is commenced. The saddle slides in one or more grooves in the bed and on a V-sectional rail and is traversed by a nut thereon engaging a screwed spindle e<3> which may be rotated by hand or by a small electric motor. The face-plate is rotated by a bevel gear on a shaft f movable axially with the saddle and driven by a splined gear g and belt pulleys (not shown). The radius of action of the lathe may be further increased by securing an auxiliary bed, for receiving the face-plate, to the bed e and replacing the shaft f by a longer shaft. After adjustment on the bed the face-plate is secured thereto by screws or clamps.
