Turning.-A slide-rest for a lathe for turning curved profiles is provided with a tool-carrying lever having both oscillatory and longitudinal movement and so arranged that any point of the lever may be constrained to follow the curve of a templet fixed to the sliderest. The tool holder a, Figs. 1 and la, guided horizontally between the cover o and frame n of the slide-rest, is provided with a roller engaging a templet lixed to the cover, o and is moved by means of a pin d on a toothed crank-disc e. A second toothed crank-disc g, slotted to receive a block carried by a pin i secured to the tool holder, ensures that the roller l passes round the whole curve of the templet. The crank-discs e and g are driven through the spur wheel f and worm gearing m. In a modification, Fig. 2, the crank-disc e is replaced by a stationary pivot d. In a further modification, Fig. 4, the tool-holding lever a is double armed and the crank-disc g is driven by worm gearing g<1>. In another modification the lever is provided with a curved rack and is actuated by a pinion journaled in the frame of the rest and driven through worm gearing. A number of further modifications of the actuating mechanism are described. In the form shown in Fig. 11, the tool is mounted in a slide j adjustable in the lever a by a spindle q. In order to compensate for the alteration of the lever ratios produced by the adjustment of the slide j, a scale a' is provided on the lever a and the tool slide which is slightly retracted while the roughing cuts are taken, is positioned for the finishing cut so that a mark j<1> coincides with the zero of the scale a<3>.
