Abstract
546,689. Making templates and jigs. WINTERBOTTOM, I. Dec. 23, 1940, Nos. 18013/40 and 173/41. [Classes 83 (ii) and 83 (iii)] Milling-machines; copying and reproducing mechanism.-In making templates or jigs, a drawing-machine is used to cut the drawing direct into a matrix which is used as a first pattern for actuating the copying mechanism of a known reproducing machine by which the jigs are cut. The matrix may be of synthetic resin or other plastic or of aluminium or other soft metal. A bed or frame 10 within which the matrix block is mounted has bearings for parallel screws 11 interconnected by a shaft 14 and bevel gearing 15 and rotated in unison by a hand crank 17 operating in conjunction with a micrometer head 17a. A beam 18 is moved parallel to one side of the frame by the screws 11 and carries a longitudinal slide 20 operated by a screw 21 from a hand wheel 22 associated with a micrometer head 23. A cutting tool 24, Fig. 2, which may be driven by a flexible shaft 28 is mounted in a bore 20a in the slide 20, the depth of cut being determined by a collar 26a. For cutting inclined lines or circular arcs, a trammel bar 31 may be pivoted in the bore 20a and may be moved over a protractor quadrant 32. The bar carries a secondary slide 34 provided with a bore for the reception of tool 24 and actuated by a screw 33 with a hand wheel 35 with a micrometer head 36. Arcs of predetermined radius may be cut by moving the trammel bar by hand about its trunnion. For curves of small radius the centre may first be marked and then a pair of compasses, one leg of which carries a tool such as 24, used to cut the required curve. Incisions of various shapes may be cut by using rotary tools of corresponding form. For cutting very soft materials a blade-like cutter 25, Fig. 3, guided by arms 39, 40, may be used. The slides 20, 34 may be fitted with adjustable taper gibs to take up wear. Specifications 476,568 and 485,146, [both in Group XX], are referred to.
