476,206. Turning pistons. GAUSSE, A. Dec. 1.2, 1936, No. 34205. Convention date, Dec. 12, 1935. [Classes 83 (ii) and 83 (iii)] In a method of turning a piston to an elliptical cross-section, tools revolve in a plane inclined to the axis of the piston, while the latter is advanced in the direction of its axis. A longitudinally movable carriage 5 carries a cross-slide 7 having a fixed mandrel 9 to which a piston, already turned to a circular crosssection, is attached. A rotary tool-head 12 journalled in the head 10 rotates about the piston, tools 13 being adjustable by the screws 14 ; the axis of the tool carrier is inclined at a fixed angle alpha to the piston axis and when the piston is moved axially, the upper and lower surfaces are relieved by the tools ; alternatively, the tool-head may be carried on a longitudinally movable carriage and the piston maintained stationary. By moving the cross-slide 7 equal amounts to each side of the original position, the piston may be given a more nearly cylindrical form over part of its length.
