A method of machining the convex surface of a blade 11, e.g. a turbine blade comprises reciprocating a cutter 20 along the length of the blade at a relatively high speed while simultaneously moving the cutter around the contour of the blade. In a machine for carrying out the method a head H carrying a spindle 50 and cutter 20 is reciprocated at variable speed, in order to maintain a constant cutting load throughout each stroke, by means of an hydraulic cylinder unit 60-63. Simultaneously the column C of the machine which carries the head H, and a saddle S are moved in a plane transverse to the axis of the blade under control of an electrical or hydraulic copying unit having a tracer 80 in contact with a template T. The rate of transverse movement is varied in dependence upon the radius of the blade contour in order to maintain a constant cutting load on the cutter 20.
