Abstract
767,676. Copy-milling. BOULTON PAUL AIRCRAFT, Ltd. May 18, 1954 [Feb. 19, 1953; April 23, 1953], Nos. 4669/53 and 11200/53. Class 83(3). [Also in Group XXIII] A machine for machining forms on an oblique or right-conical or cylindrical-surface, comprises a beam 8 constrained to move parallel to a generating-line 3 of the surface and to be set in any desired position, and a power-driven cutter 22 which can be fed by power-means 27 along the beam. The beam is mounted for universal movement at each end in supports 13, 14, and is additionally axially slidable in the support 14. The supports 13, 14 are fed by interconnected power-controlled means (represented by wheels 17, 18 in the Figure), and are guided by cams or cam-slots 9, 10, so that the beam always lies parallel to a generating line. The milling-cutter 22 or grinding-wheel is fed by the motor 27 through a screw-and-nut 26, 28. The cutter may be vertically-adjustable so that chordwise stiffening-ribs or spanwise sparelements 30 may be cut in work 2 to form a wing of the type described in Specification 767,674. The work is clamped by screwed-studs 6 on a girder 4. A displacement-transducer may travel with the cutter and compensate for sag in the beam due to cutter-travel, or a series of transducers may be used in conjunction with a fixed datum.
