Abstract
567,746. Shaping curved surfaces; making turbine blades. BAUMANN, K., and METROPOLITAN - VICKERS ELECTRICAL CO., Ltd. May 7, 1941, No. 5947. [Classes 83 (ii) and 83 (iii)] The method described in Specification 567,744 for producing curved surfaces, such as those of turbine blades, by turning &c., is applied to the production of such surfaces by planing or shaping. The work 18 is mounted in a cradle 16 trunnioned at 15 in a cradle 13, trunnioned at 11 in brackets on a slide 7. Spherical rollers 17b and 12b on the respective cradles engage cams 5, 6 driven by a stop 1 also carrying a crank 107 that oscillates a tool carrying bar 101. The cutter 3 may be adjustable in the bar for applying the cut and the slide 7 traverses the work past the cutter and the rollers over the cams which may move on the shaft 1 proportionally to the movement of the slide 7, so that one set of cams may be used for work of various lengths. In a modification shown as for producing a convex surface, the positions of tool and work are interchanged, and in a further modification, the tool is reciprocated by the ram of a shaper, the shaft 1 being geared to rotate at the same speed as the driving crank of the shaper. The mechanism may be formed as a lathe &c. attachment.
