Abstract

622,744. Gear-cutting. NATIONAL BROACH & MACHINE CO. July 17, 1946, No. 21343. Convention date, Jan. 2, 1943. [Class 83 (iii)] A method of finishing a shoulder-gear 10 comprises meshing at crossed axes the gear solely with a tapered shaving cutter 5 having its larger end nearest the shoulder, rotating the gear and cutter while in mesh, and at the same time relatively reciprocating the gear and cutter. In a machine for carrying out the method, the cutter 5 is positively driven and mounted on a carriage 4 pivoted to a bracket 3. The shoulder-gear 10 to be finished is mounted between centres 21, 22 on a worktable 20 which is reciprocated along guides 19 by a nut 9 working in an adjustable bracket 23 carried on the slide. The work-table is adjusted angularly about a pivot 14 by a screw 15 on a sub-table 6 which is adjusted vertically by a hand wheel 7 or fed automatically. The bevel angle of the cutter is about 3 to 20 degrees, the axes cross at about 2 to 10 degrees, and the cutter is arranged so that the point of intersection of the axes falls between the centre and the rear face of the cutter as shown in Fig. 2. In a modification, the work is rotated and reciprocated horizontally, and the cutter is mounted on an angularly-adjustable carriage. External and internal gears of the shoulder or open type may be finished, and in the latter case the axes may cross at about 3 to 30 degrees.
