Abstract

574,988. Gear-cutting. HOLROYD & CO., Ltd., J., and WALKER, H. Feb. 10, 1944, No. 2483. [Class 83 (iii)] An involute worm, spiral gear or helical gear 1 is formed by means of two milling-cutters or grinding-wheels 2, 3, having plane cutting or grinding faces 4, 5 opposed and parallel to each other, the cutters straddling one or more threads of the worm or gear and being arranged with the axis of one in advance of the other so that both cutters start and finish cutting at the same time. The reverse sides 6 of the cutters may be of any convenient shape. A machine for carrying out the operation comprises a base 14 on which is mounted a headstock 15 and a tailstock 17 between which is carried the blank. The cutters are mounted on mandrels 29, each of which is rotated from a driven shaft 25 through bevel gears 26<1> and spur gears 35, 36, 37. Cradles 26, 27 carrying the mandrels and their driving gear may be rotated about the axes of gears 26<1> by means of a worm 30 rotatable by hand and meshing with teeth 31 on the head 21. The mandrels are axially adjustable within the cradles by means of screws 33 and nuts 34 forming parts of slidable bearings 28. Both cradles are mounted on a head 21 which is circularly adjustable on a slide 19 traversable on the base 14 in the direction of the axis of the worm or gear blank.
