Abstract

591,916. Gear-cutting. WICKMAN, A. C. March 30, 1945, No. 8116. [Class 83 (iii)] In a machine for grinding helical toothed gears, helical splined shafts and similar work by means of a helically ribbed grinding-wheel b, the work d is mounted on a spindle c inclined to the cutter spindle a so that the tooth surfaces being ground are in alignment with the operative surfaces of the cutter and is moved parallel to such surfaces whilst being rotated in synchronism with the cutter through toothed gearing. The cutter is mounted on a transversely adjustable slide w and is driven directly or through a pulley h, the spindle a being connected to the work spindle c through gearing i, m, n, p, r, t and v. Spindle c is carried by a member e rotatably adjustable on a slide f which is fed during grinding parallel with the tooth faces being operated upon so as to operate on the whole length of the teeth and also to distribute wear on the cutter. The necessity for compensatory rotation of the tool and work is thus avoided.
