Abstract
672,018. Gear-cutting. BROWN & SONS (HUDDERSFIELD), Ltd., D., and SYKES, A. Jan. 4, 1951 [Jan. 5, 1950], No. 256/50. Class 83 (iii). A gear-hobbing machine comprises a workspindle b horizontally slidable in the upper part of a frame a, a vertically-adjustable carriage carrying a hob e, and a motor and gearing g for rotating the hob and for transmitting motion to a feed-shaft extending horizontally across the lower part of the frame. The machine additionally comprises drive means connecting the feed-shaft to an elongated pinion r meshing with a master-wheel s on the end of the workspindle remote from the work-piece, and a feedscrew t fast on the work-spindle and engaging an axially-fixed nut u rotatable by a return motor y. In a modification, the nut u may be rotated during cutting so that one feed-screw may be used for all rates of feed.
