Abstract
878,560. Gear-cutting. GLEASON WORKS. Aug. 25, 1959 [Sept. 18, 1958], No. 29042/59. Class 83 (3). A gear-cutting machine comprises a cutter head 13 on a rotatable cradle 11 having a power-driven coaxial shaft, a remote intermediate shaft 26 (261) connected thereto by gearing 28, 29, and a cutter spindle drive shaft 39 connected to the intermediate shaft by means including a telescopic shaft 35, 36 perpendicular to the shafts and connected thereto by bevel gearing 33, 34, 37, 38. In a bevel-gear cutting-machine, two intermeshing cutters C, C<SP>1</SP> cut the teeth on a blank G indexed about an axis intersecting the cradle axis, the blank support 15 being withdrawn clear of the cutters during indexing. The cutters are adjusted to represent the teeth of a straight or skew bevel crown gear by means of angularly adjustable plates 16, 16<SP>1</SP> and perpendicularly adjustable plates 17, 171 and cutter heads 13, 13<SP>1</SP>. Each spindle drive shaft 39 drives its cutter through gearing 41, 42 and spur gearing 44, 45. If a machine of the type disclosed in Specification 694,878 were to be adjustable as in Fig. 6 for cutting skew bevel gears, openings 52 would be required in the cradle to allow for the drive mechanism adjustments.
