Abstract

599,235. Gear-cutting. BROWN & SONS (HUDDERSFIELD), Ltd., D.. SYKES, A., and TUPLTN, W. A. Oct. 30, 1945, No. 28686. [Class 83 (iii)] In a gear-cutting machine employing the creep method of distributing periodic errors arising in the work-table drive, the worm c driving the work-table worm-wheel b is reciprocated within predetermined limits in a circular path coaxial with the worm-wheel. The worm is mounted on a cradle d pivoted on the worktable shaft a<1> and engaging a projection j<5> on a nut j<4> in engagement with a screw-threaded portion j<3> of a shaft j rotated by a variablespeed reversible motor k. The amplitude and speed of reciprocation of the cradle d by the motor may be variable and the amplitude may be determined by limit switches. The alteration in speed of the work-table consequent on the change of position of the point of engagement of the worm and worm-wheel is compensated so that the rate of creep does not affect the relativespeeds of the hob h and the work-table by a gear i on the shaft j engaging teeth f<3> on the casing of a differential gear f connected to a universally-jointed shaft e<1> that drives the worm c.
