Abstract
665,145. Gear - cutting. NATIONAL BROACH & MACHINE CO. March 21, 1949 [June 7, 1948], No. 7670/49. Class 83 (iii). A gear hobbing machine comprises drive means 45 including gear trains for rotating the spindles of the hob H and the work W, independent means 110 for relatively traversing the spindles, and splined parts 83, 87, responsive to the traversing movement, for super-imposing a compensating rotation on one of the spindles to allow variation of the traversing rate. The work W is mounted on a table 25 which is angularly adjustable on a slide 20 traversed, at a variable speed, by a screw 126. The hob H is mounted on a carriage 30 which is angularly adjustable on a slide 15 adjustable vertically by a hand wheel 35. The work W and the hob H are both driven through change gearing and a worm 50 by the electric motor 45. The work drive also includes further change gearing and the helically-splined connection 83, 87, which, when the slide 20 is traversed, causes an incremental rotation of the work. The lead is thus adjusted by changing the members 83, 87, and is more finely adjusted by angular adjustment of the hob and the work. A fly-wheel 64 is provided in the drive to the hob. The motor 110 is reversible to provide a rapid idle return of the work-slide. In a modification, the worktable 25 is not adjustable angularly. Framings.-The hob-slide is mounted in guides 16, Fig. 4, at one corner of the frame.
