A gear-hobbing machine having the tool movable axially and tangentially of the work comprises two differential drives 19, 20, each associated with a change gear so that additional rotations can be added to the work when the hob moves axially or tangentially whereby both feeds are driven independently of one another. The hob-head 8 is adjustable angugularly in a slide 7. The work is rotated by a gear 33 mounted on a slide 3. The main motor 9 rotates a shaft 11 through an infinitelyvariable speed and reversing drive 10. The shaft 11 rotates the work through change gears 15-18, which are selected according to the teeth on the gear and starts on the hob, a shaft 21, and a worm 22. The differentials are both arranged on the shaft 21. The hob is rotated from the shaft 11 through gears 24, 27, 29, 30 and is carried on a slide 34. The slide 3 is moved by a screw 46 driven by the shaft 11 through gears 13, 37, 38, 40 infinitelyvariable reversing gearing 42 and a shaft 45. The worm-wheel 38 also drives the screw 56 to feed the slide 7 axially of the gear via gears 48, 49, an infinitely-variable reversing gear 50 and gears 51, 55, and this movement is compensated via change gears 58-61 (selected according to the pitch and helical angle), 63 and 67. The hob is moved tangentially by a screw 85 rotated by the worm-wheel 38 through gear 68, infinitely-variable reversing gear 70, gears 74, 78, 80, 81 and 83, the movement being compensated through change speed gears 87-90 (selected according to hob angles), and gears 92 and 96.
