607,057. Gear-cutting. BROWN & SONS (HUDDERSFIELD), Ltd., D., and FEARNS, S. Jan. 24, 1946,-No. 2350. [Class 83 (iii)] In a machine for hobbing helical gears, the hob 11 and the worm 31 driving the rotary work-table 27 through a worm-wheel 30 and gears 29, 38 are both rotated by an electric motor 26, the worm 31 being driven through change gearing 37 and a universally-jointed shaft 34; a cradle 52 pivotal about the axis of the work-table carries the worm 31, wormwheel 30 and gear 29 and has teeth meshing with a worm 53 driven from a shaft 45 that also drives a shaft 51 providing the feed motion for the hob saddle. The shaft 45 is driven, through change gearing 44, from a separate motor 40 or, alternatively, from the motor 26. Any alteration in the speed of the hob is accompanied by a corresponding variation in the speed of the work-table which, combined with the hob saddle feed and influenced by the creep given to the worm 31, gives the desired helix angle to the teeth of the work-piece. The rate of hob saddle feed can be altered while work is in progress and is accompanied by a corresponding change in the rate of creep.
