Abstract
580,747. Epicyclic gearing. STEVENS, A. H. (Michigan Tool Co.). Nov. 23, 1943, No. 19578. [Class 80 (i)] [Also in Group XXII] In a gear-cutting machine two spindles carrying respectively a gear blank and a worm cutting tool or a hob are driven from shafts 20, 34 each of which is driven by a motor 74. The motor operates through a belt 80, shaft 84, gearing 86, 88, shaft 90, gearing 94, 96, shaft 34 and gearing 30, 32 to drive the spindle 24 and also operates through the shaft 34, change gearing 98, 101, 102 and 104, shaft 106 and differential 108 to drive the shaft 20. Side feed of the tool is effected by rotating the shaft 20 relatively to the shaft 106 through the differential 108 which comprises a rotatable casing 110 formed with a gear 120 and housing a gear 112 keyed to the shaft 106 and a gear 114 keyed to the shaft 20, both meshing with a gear 116 mounted in the casing. The gear 114 has one tooth less than the gear 112 so that one complete revolution of the casing 108 through a worm 122 and shaft 124 serves to rotate the gear 114 by one tooth relative to the gear 112.
