4693. Fawcus, T. Feb. 24. Gear-cutting.-A hobbing-machine for cutting double helical gears comprises a rotary blanksupporting table and two hobs mounted on one slide to be fed together in the same direction, the one cutting the teeth at one side of the peripheral centre and the other at the other side thereof, the hobs being driven at different speeds to enable them to cut teeth at rcverse angles to the axis of the blank. The blank A on the rotary table 3 is driven by shafts 39, and the cutters 7, 8 on the slide 11 are driven by shafts 18 on either side of the machine gearing with a main driver 23 through differential gearing 26. A shipper rod 67 first connects the table 5 to the driver till the required depth of cut is attained, and then puts the slide feed screw 14 into gear and connects the worms 28 with the external threads 27 of the differential gear thus causing the hob 7 to rotate slightly slower and the hob 8 to rotate slightly faster than its normal, to produce the proper angularity of the teeth as the hob slide 11 is fed downwards. After the hobs 7, 8 have operated, a hob on the shaft 80 may be used to cut out the apexes of the teeth and form clearance spaces as described in Specification 29,461/10, [Class 80 (i), Gearing, Belt &c.]. The differential motion of the hobs may be produced by mounting each to be driven by a shaft 83 with a helical keyway 84 engaging the gear 85 driving the hob 82, the downward feed of the gear 85 causing an increase or retardation of its speed in accordance with the direction and pitch of the helical keyway. Change gears 88, 89 may be employed.
