363,544. Driving milling &c. machines. AKTIEBOLAGET SVENSKA KULLAGERFABRIKEN, 17, Artillerigatan, Gothenburg, Sweden. Feb. 6, 1931, No. 3890. Convention date, Feb. 8, 1930. [Class 83 (iii).] The rate of automatic teed in a machine tool such as a grinding, drilling, or milling machine or a lathe diminishes automatically as the load or cut done by the machine increases and vice versa. In Fig. 1 the spindle 7 of the grinding wheel belt-drives the rotor 11 of an A.C. motor the " stator of which is also mounted to revolve and drive the pulley 16 which drives the feed screw 26 by belt 17 and worm and gearing 22, 23. The speed of the stator 14 and therefore the feed 1 depends on the relative speed of the rotor 11 which is affected by the speed of the grinding wheel. If the grinding wheel is sufficiently overloaded, the feed screw 26 will ultimately be reversed to withdraw the tool from the work. In a modification the feed is driven by a standard type A.C. motor, the current to which is supplied from a standard A.C. generator the armature of which is coupled by a belt drive to the grinding wheel spindle. In direct current supply the current taken by the tool driving motor is led to the field of the feed motor to slow it down or vice versa or the armature current of an A.C. driving motor can be rectified and applied to the field of a D.C. feed motor. A mechanical differential is shown in Fig. 4 in which a disc 41 carrying planet pinions drives the feed screw 26. The rate of driving of the feed depends on the variable speed of the sun pinion 43 driven by belt from the grinding wheel spindle relative to the constant speed of the internally toothed ring gear 44 driven by belt 46 from a motor 45.
