966,565. Machine tool details. WAVIS ENGINEERING DEVELOPMENT CO. Ltd. May 2, 1962 [May 3, 1961], No. 15958/61. Headings B3C, B3K and B3N. [Also in Division F2] A drilling, reaming, tapping, milling &c. head comprises a tool spindle driven by an electric motor and a feed nut driven by a separate motor, the spindle and nut being driven at differential speeds. Ths head comprises a twopart spindle 121, 122 pinned together, which is driven from an electric motor 19 through a belt 18 and pulleys 191, 17. A second electric motor 24 rotates a feed nut 26 by gears 241, 23, 22, 21 and the nut co-operates with a lead screw 27 pinned to spindle part 121 at 271, the motors being connected by a magnetic clutch 25. Adjustable dogs 310-312 are carried by a rod 30, fixed to spindle part 122, and co-operate with plungers 320-322 for tripping microswitches 33 for controlling the motors. Lead screw 27 is threaded in the opposite direction to the rotation of the spindle and, as nut 26 is rotated a rapid approach to the work of the spindle is effected. Dog 310 actuates switch 33 to switch on motor 19 which rotates the spindle at a lower speed than nut 26, consequently the feed continues at a lower rate. When the operation is completed dog 311 causes motor 24 to stop, and a rapid return of the spindle is effected. Dog 312 then causes motor 19 to stop and the head is ready for a further cycle. The motors are coupled by clutch 25 when both are rotating and as feed screw 26 requires less power than the spindle the excess power from motor 24 is used for driving the spindle during cutting. The drives from the motors may be by gears or belts.
