Combined turning, drilling, milling, and planing machines. - A combination metal-cutting machine tool comprises a vertical housing 1 containing the driving mechanism for the various units which are arranged around the housing and are all operated at the normal height. The lathe bed 9, carrying a tailstock 12 and slide rest 10. is mounted on the right, Fig. 1. of the housing, while on the left is mounted a vertically adjustable table 2 having a transverse slide 3 and work-table 4. An adjustable overhanging arm 5 connected to the upper part 1<a> of the housing carries on one side a fixed drilling spindle 7 and on the other a tool slide 6 which for planing operations receives a cross feed movement operated from the table 4. A fixed milling spindle, 8 is mounted parallel to the lathe spindle. A main shaft 16, driven either by an electromotor 14 or from belt-pulleys 15. carries a pulley 18<1> which drives a pulley 18 on a countershaft 17, geared to a sleeve on the lathe spindle 19 through change speed gearing arranged to give six spindle speeds. By the use of further pairs of sliding gears an additional four speeds may be obtained. The sleeve is connected to the spindle by a sliding coupling 25 which may alternatively be engaged with a fixed member to hold the spindle stationary when required. A wheel 26 on the spindle sleeve, which drives the milling spindle through a wheel 27 also engages a wheel 28 on a countershaft 29 which through bevel and spur gearing drives the leading screw 37 of the lathe. The countershaft 29 drives the drilling spindle by the bevel gearing shown in Fig. 1, while further gearing from the countershaft, comprising gears 31, 32, shaft 33, worm gearing 34, shaft 23, and the spur and bevel gearing shown in Fig. 4, operates the screw 24 of the table 4 to impart the slow feed for milling operations. The reciprocation of the table 4 for planing is obtained by reversing belt gearing from a pulley 22' on the mainshaft, which drives pulleys 22 connected by spur gears to the shaft 23, the planing and milling drives to the table being selectively obtained by means of a sliding clutch 35. An alternative drive 36 from the shaft 33 is provided for operating the lead screw.
