Combined turning, drilling, and milling machines.-A combination lathe, drilling, and milling machine comprises a vertical drilling or milling spindle, mounted above a reciprocatory work table, an horizontal milling spindle, and a lathe of which the bed has a detachable section to accommodate a face-plate on the spindle, all the various units being operated from the lathe spindle which serves as a driving shaft. As shown in Figs. 1 and 1<a> the lathe spindle 9, driven from a stepped pulley having back gears 13, carries a wheel 20 driving through a reversing pair of meshing gears 22 operated from a lever 24 a. shaft 21 connected by change gearing to the lead screw 18. In a neutral position of the lever 24 the lead-screw driving-gear is inoperative. The headstock spindle also carries a gear 29 which drives through bevel and spur gearing and handoperated clutch 38 the vertical milling or drilling spindle 44 journaled in a bracket 10 secured to the headstock. The vertical spindle may be fed from the hand-wheel 55 or from a ratchet lever 51, a clutch 48 being provided so that either feed mechanism may be used. For milling, the spindle is positioned by means of the hand-wheel gearing and locked by a screw 56. The spindle is counterbalanced by a weight 58 guided in the frame 10. For horizontal milling, one end of a cutter arbor 59 is clamped in an extension of the spindle 9 which is hollow and has its opposite end tapered. The cutter arbor is supported in a member 60 on the overhanging arm 61, the latter sliding into a tubular portion of the headstock when the vertical spindle is in use. The work table 64 is mounted on a compound slide on a knee 11 and is operated from the main spindle 9 through gears 30, bevel gearing 68, changespeed-gear box 71, telescopic shaft 74, spur gearing 75, and spindle 77. The latter spindle carries a worm engaging the table feed-screw 78 and the front side of the work table is provided with adjustable dogs 80 which engage a trip lever 81 to disengage the feed worm at opposite ends of the traverse. Cross-feed of the work table is effected from a crank-handle 86, and the knee is vertically adjusted from a second crank-handle 82, index dials 87 and 88 being provided for the respective adjustments of the knee and cross slide. In Fig. 1 the machine is shown with the detachable section of the lathe bed removed to accommodate a. face-plate.
