Abstract

231. Halterbeck, J. Jan. 3. Drilling-machines.-A machine designed for cutting, milling, &c. wood and similar materials in which the cutting-tool is moved in a concave or convex curve can be used for drilling. The tool spindle 7, rotated through bevel-gearing by a belt pulley 16, is vertically slidable in a holder 8 which is secured, so as to be angularly adjustable, to a block 9 slidable in horizontal slotted guides 6 carried by arms 4, 5 extending from a main arm 3 on a standard 1. An adjustable sleeve 22 on the tool spindle engages a pin 23 on an oscillatable frame 18 secured to a flanged hub 19 mounted on the arm 3. The forward end of the pin 23 engages in a grooved guide 28 on the holder 8, and the other end is set in a socket extending from a plate 30 having bevelled sides which engage the correspondingly-shaped frame 18 The plate 30 is provided with backwardly-disposed lugs 31, 31<a> embracing a wormwheel 34 on a shaft 32 engaging rack teeth on the frame 18 so that the tool spindle may be displaced by rotating a hand-wheel on a shaft 47 operating through toothed gearing the shaft 32. The work is secured to a sliding bar 94 carried by a table 75 rotatably mounted on a carriage 81, which is slidable on a vertically adjustable bracket 76 on the stand 1. The drilling is effected by putting the mechanism for oscillating the frame 18 out of gear and the feed is obtained by the vertical movement either of the tool or of the table.
