Milling-machines drilling- machines ; tapping. - In a rotary spindle machine-tool for milling, boring, drilling, tapping, reaming and the like, a vertical tool spindle is driven and fed vertically by means of an electromotor 75, and the lateral tool feeds may be operated by either of two further electric motors 18, 19 the former being preferably used for the cutting feed and the latter for adjustments or quick return movements. The work is supported on a fixed bed 10 having longitudinal extensions 12 which carry vertical housings supporting the vertically adlustable cross rail 15 which carries the tool head 70 and spindle 14. The motor 18 drives a sleeve 22 which is loose on a cross shaft 23 and which drives through gears 24, 25 a loose sleeve 26 mounted on a parallel shaft - 27 and connected by chain gearing 30 with a sleeve 31 on the cross shaft. The motor 19 drives through chain gearing 45, 47, the sleeves 48, 46, mounted respectively on the shafts 23, 27. The sleeves carry clutch teeth coacting with teeth on splined members 34, 35 operated through lever mechanism by hand levers 38, 39 on the front of the machine. Either motor may thus be arranged to drive either or both of the shafts 23, 27. Reversing controllers 52a, 53 are provided for the motors 18, 19 respectively. The shaft 27 is connected by bevel gearing 50 to the screws 51 for traversing the housings on the ways 12, while one end of the shaft 23 is connected through bevel gearing 54, shaft 55, bevel gearing 56, vertical shaft 59, and bevel gearing 60, to the screw 61 which actuates the cress-feed of the tool head 70. Hand adjustment of the cross-feed screw may be effected from a hand-wheel 69, the amount of movement being indicated by a graduated disc. The motor 75, having a reversing controller 74, is connected by reduction gearing with a shaft 77 which drives a vertical shaft 79 connected bv tumbler gearing controlled by a rod 85 to one of the interconnected vertical spindles 88 for adjusting the height of the cross rail. The shaft 79 carries a sliding bevel gear 90 which through a shaft 91 and bevel gearing drives a vertical shaft 93. The latter carrier a sliding pair of gears 94 which may be selectively engaged with gears 99. 100, to impart a two speed drive to the spindle 14. The change-speed gearing is controlled by a hand-lever 97. On the upper end of the spindle is mounted a stepped pulley 102 from which is driven a shaft 104, geared to a spindle 107 connected by worm gearing 108, and rack and pinion gearing to impart vertical feed to the spindle sleeve. Fine adjustment may be effected from a hand-wheel 112 in conjunction with a scale. Rough adjustment of the spindle may be effected by means of a second hand-wheel 122. The toolhead is counterbalanced by a weight 120. In addition to the longitudinal and transverse lateral feeds, both these feeds may work simultaneously to give a diagonal milling cut. or the lateral feeds may be combined with a vertical feed for certain types of work.
