Abstract

704,400. Milling. BIRMINGHAM TOOL & GAUGE CO., Ltd. June 23, 1952 [June 22, 1951], No. 14829/51. Class 83 (3) A machine for cutting helical flutes on a tapered milling cutter &c. comprises a flexible member 27 adapted to pass around a former 17 and which automatically controls the speed of rotation of the former and a blank 14 in relation to their axial movement against a cutting tool 21, so that the flutes have a constant helix angle x when measured from the axis of the blank. The former 17 and blank 14 are rotated by worm gearing 11 and are mounted on a slide 8 traversed at constant speed by screw gearing rotated by a gear 20. The cord 27 is attached, at one end, to the former 17 and, at the other, to a cross-head 28 carrying a valve 29. The valve body 30 is mounted on a slide 23 moved on rollers 22 by a pinion driven from the gear 20 and engaging rack teeth on the slide 23. The valve 29 controls a hydraulic motor which rotates the worm gearing 11, and hence the blank 14, through gearing 36, 37, 39. The rotation of the work is therefore infinitely variable to take up the cord 27 on the former as the slide 23 is moved.
