Abstract

782,717. Gear-cutting; gear-finishing. PRAEG, W. S. July 19, 1955 [Aug. 23, 1954], No. 20848/55. Class 83 (3). In a method and machine for roughing and finishing gears in a single operation the tool comprises several cutting sections 18a-18e increasing in diameter from a plain guiding portion 14. It is rotated in timed relation with the work 10 and advanced through the work until the portion 18e reaches the point X. The work is then moved axially in the opposite direction so that all teeth are cut to depth by the portion 18e. Both work and tool may have geared compensatory movement to take account of helical teeth, or may be guided by splines of the same angle as the teeth so that the rate of feed may be varied regardless of the helical angles. The axes are crossed at from 5 to 45 degrees. The cutter may have several sets of finishing teeth which are brought into operation in turn when the preceding set becomes blunt. Alternatively, the finishing teeth may be combined with shaving teeth so that the tooth is cut and shaved. In one machine, the cutter 70 is advanced by a manually-rotated screw 76, Fig. 4, and is rotated by a gear 56 on a straight-splined shaft 54. The work 86 is traversed by a screw 90, the drive-gear 84 being on a helicallysplined shaft. In a modified machine, the work W, Fig. 5, is clamped by a pneumaticallyoperated centre 122 and is traversed by a piston 108, and the movement compensated by splines 118. The cutter C on a slide 138 is advanced by a fluid-pressure device 140 and the movement compensated by splines 142. The slide 138 is carried by a member 130 adjustable angularly about a shaft 132 on a horizontallyadjustable slide 126. Switches 184, 188 and dogs 186, 190 provide for an automatic cycle. The carbide tool has a front rake of 20 degrees, and a cutting speed of 300-600 surface ft/min. is used. The teeth have top lands so that front grinding of the faces does not reduce diameter. Removing cuttings. The floor 192 of the machine slopes down to a chip-removal opening 194.
