[Also in Groups XIX and XXIII] A machine for forming or measuring the profile of a bevel gear tooth comprises a first rigid member 11 having an arcuate portion 14a and representing the generating plane of the tooth profile, a work carrier 12 for the gear blank 16, the member 11 and the carrier 12 being relatively movable about the axis of the arcuate portion, a second rigid member 20 secured to the work-spindle 19 and having an arcuate portion representing the gear cone to be rolled on the plane, rectilinear slide means 14 for connecting both arcuate portions in non-slipping relationship, and a tool 21 movable to engage the blank along the generator of the tooth profile. The disc 11 is fixed to the machine frame 10 and represents a great circle of an imaginary sphere S. The carrier 12 is oscillatable about the axis OX of the sphere S and carries the blank or partly-finished gear 16. The carrier 12 also supports the slide 14 which contacts the disc 11 in non-slipping relationship at 14a, so that upon oscillation of the carrier, the slide is reciprocated. The blank 16 is carried so that its axis intersects the point O, and is rotated by the disc 20 which contacts an edge 14b in non-slipping relationship and has a diameter equal to AQ. The generating motion imposed represents the rolling of the cone OAQ on the sphere S. The grinding wheel 21, or single or multiple-edge cutting tool, is reciprocated on a slideway 23 which is pivoted about the axis OX for feed purposes or for providing tip relief. If a grinding wheel is used the generating motion is rapid and the reciprocating speed of the wheel slow, but, if a cutting tool is used, the reciprocations are rapid and the generating motion intermittent. The slideway 23 may be offset, as in Fig. 6, to produce spiral bevel gears with straight teeth. A second tool may be provided. In a modification, the blank 16, Fig. 7, is carried on a member 15 adjustable on an arcuate surface 24 of a cross-slide 25. The edge of the member 14 in contact with the disc 20 is adjustable by means of a member 27. The machine may thus be set for forming involute profiles or standard profiles. The wheel 21 may be replaced by a cup-wheel for curved-tooth gears. The tool may be replaced by a feeler to check the tooth shape.
