Abstract

Milling-machines; milling-cutters; reamers. - Rotary cutting tools such as milling-cutters, reamers and the like have cutting-edges which are inclined to the axis of rotation of the tool are made by mounting the blank on a rotatable arbor carried by a reciprocating slide which is moved under a profiled milling-cutter while the blank is simultaneously oscillated to a varying degree to produce a tapered groove and to form oppositely inclined helical teeth. The table T of a milling-machine which is movable transversely of the milling-spindle Z and is mounted on the longitudinal slide S, carries a housing 1 supporting in bearings a hollow shaft 2. The latter carries a toothed segment 3 engaging a vertically-sliding rack 4 which has a pin 6 engaging a block working in a slotted arm 28 pivoted at 7 in a bearing 9 fixed to the slide S. The arm 28 is oscillated by means of a crank 10 on a driven shaft 14. The hollow spindle 2 carries a spindle 32 which is provided with a dividing- plate 16 coacting with an index pin 17 secured to the spindle 2. The blank A is secured by nuts 21 to a mandrel 20 which is carried between centres 22, 23 and is connected to the spindle 32 by a coupling-sleeve 19. In operation, the end b of the blank is brought beneath the profiled milling-cutter H and the blank is oscillated through the lever 28, rack 4 and segment 3. As the slide T is moved to the right, Fig. 2, the rack pin 6 approaches the pivot 7 of the lever 28 so that the oscillation of the blank gradually decreases to zero and a tapering groove f forming a cutting-edge c and a back edge c' is produced. The blank is then indexed and the operation repeated. In a modification, Figs. 11 and 12 a frame B, pivoted on a lower frame R at 69 carries the blank A between centres 42, 43, the dividing movement being effected by means of a notched disc 44. A slot 65, provided in the frame B, is engaged by a block 59 actuated by an adjustable crank-disc 57 driven through worm gearing from a pulley 52. During the traversing of the table F under the milling- cutter H, the frame B is thus rocked about its pivot 69 to produce a tapering groove. After completion of a groove the blank is indexed and the operation repeated. When all the grooves 63 have been milled out, the blank is reversed end for end on its mandrel and the oppositelytapering grooves 64 are formed in a similar way.
